Your Stuff, Wherever You Are ▲ top

Kumo enables students, faculty, and staff to easily access their files wherever they are, from any managed computer on campus, including lab workstations and virtual environments such as Citrix XenApp and XenDesktop.

Users access files via mounted drives in Windows Explorer, and Open/Save dialogs in applications. These drives are silently setup by the Kumo client and are ready to go within seconds of logging in. Files are accessed on demand by the client rather than synced, which minimizes local storage requirements, and all file I/O occurs strictly between the cloud service and the user's machine.

Bring Your Own Data ▲ top

Users can specify exactly what storage they want to use via Kumo's self-service portal, with options including:

  • Box
  • Google Drive
  • Dropbox
  • OneDrive
  • OneDrive for Business
  • Local file servers (SMB)
  • SharePoint/WebDAV servers

Administrators can customize which storage options are available globally for all users, or for certain groups of users via federation entitlements.

Built IU Tough ▲ top

Kumo has been architected from the ground up for security.

A user manages his/her storage profile on a web Portal hosted by Indiana University and is authenticated through your school's single sign-on service via InCommon federation. All users' storage profile data is encrypted both at rest and in transit.

The Client application that mounts the cloud-facing drives is authenticated by a mutually-trusted Access Broker service that runs within your domain. The Client then interacts with the storage provider's publicly-available APIs over HTTPS.

Kumo has been analyzed, vetted, and penetration-tested by IU's own University Information Security Office.
